AFO Wrap Up

AFO Wrap Up

AFO is done and dusted for 2015! This year Queensland Floorball Association and the SB Devils Floorball Club hosted the the biggest AFO in the tournament’s history. The beautiful Gold Coast played host to 15 mens teams, 10 womens teams and 8 juniors (u15’s) teams from across Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore. The teams battled it out at Runaway Bay Sports Complex and were fuelled by delicious bbq goods (thanks Nic!) and topped up their sugar levels (or a taste of home for the Scandinavian imports) from Swedish Goodies. Plus an AFO isn’t complete without restocking on your floorball merchandise from the guys at Floorball Culture and Floorball Player or some amazing action shots from Mel Lyons Photography. But it didn’t stop there, tired muscles were mended by the physios on hand and our wonderful volunteers kept everything running on time. Thanks everyone!

SB Devils, SB She Devils, SB Little Devils and the Gold Coast Neptunes were rocking some very schmick new uniforms. We’d like to say a massive thank-you to The Plough Inn, Svea Painting, Taste and Pipemakers Australia for helping us make all of this possible. It might be a little biased, but the Neptunes and Devils were definitely winning the fashion parade.

2015 was also very exciting as Queensland welcomed its first junior team ever! The
SB Little Devils, lead by Steve and Tom, made us all proud with their determination and enthusiasm for floorball. Despite mostly being on the shorter and younger side against other teams, they fought hard and never gave up and scored 2 goals! This attitude paid off in the Floorball Australia Exhibition Match (Under 11’s) against Peninsula. The game was fought right to the end, unfortunately the Little Devils finishing a close 2nd (overall score was 6-5 to Peninsula). We hope to see Little Devils back again at the next AFO - only this time, bigger and stronger!

The SB She Devils had a successful campaign finishing 4th out of 10 teams. Under the guidance of Ola, and despite colds and a sprained ankle, the girls played hard and kept everyone on the edge of their seats right until the end of the game (often only scoring the winning goal in the last 30 seconds of the 3rd period!).

This year the SB Devils started off strong and finished 1st in their pool. It was great to see the SB Devils return to their home club from around the country/world!  Unfortunately it was not our year, the SB Devils were unsuccessful in their semi final and finished 4th out of the 15 teams. The biggest surprise this year were newcomers Gold Coast Neptunes! The boys banded together and played extremely well during their pool matches which set them up to make finals. The boys didn’t disappoint, toughing it out against Officer to finish 7th out of the 15 teams.

Congratulations to all of the teams who participated and a big thank you to everybody who helped make AFO2015 possible. It has been long hours, many phone calls, a million emails and hours of training - but I think it paid off. The tournament was amazing, thank you to everyone involved.
